Nation of Islam Member Critically Hurt in Hit and Run
FLINT TOWNSHIP, Mich. --- It's been more than two days since police say a member of the Nation of Islam was hit head-on by a car while distributing the organization's newspaper.
The nation says this is the first time in the history of the Flint chapter that a member of the organization has been hurt in traffic.
"You could drive a car under him, a full-sized sedan. He was that high in the air," said Michael Muhammad.Michael Muhammad is a longtime friend of 64-year-old Roy Muhammad.
He says he was less than a yard away when Muhammad was pummeled during a pedestrian involved-crash Sunday afternoon.
"He was unconscious and there was bleeding, and he was actually bleeding from his mouth and he was bleeding from his leg," said M. Muhammad.
Flint Township police say the incident happened on Ballenger Highway just south of Flushing Road.
Detectives are looking for the drivers of a black Chrysler 300 and a gray Chevrolet Malibu. According to the investigators, the Chrysler sustained front-end damage after hitting Muhammad.
"What it appeared is that one car was chasing the other car, and they were weaving in and out of traffic and they were going at a high rate of speed," said Jalil Carter.
Jalil Carter says he had just finished passing out The Final Call paper when he got the call to come back, only to find these orange markings.
"The circles were his physical body and his physical property, and the spots were droplets of blood," said Carter.
He describes Muhammad as a shining light and leader in Flint's Nation of Islam chapter.
Still unconscious, friends say he now has a broken femur, ribs and a brain bleed.
Carter says they're asking for prayer and the people responsible to come forward.
"We're just saying turn yourself into the authorities," Carter continued. "Deal with the consequences, so his family can get some type of closure."
Flint Township police say Muhammad is still in critical condition and no arrests have been made.
